Two is better than one
A digital twin of the test ship will be developed in this work package for remote control testing, training of ship command personnel, and investigation of remote control functionalities. In the digital twin, the physical behavior of the test ship will be formulated in terms of maneuvering characteristics, engine dynamics, and propulsion. Other required ship components, such as transverse thrusters, are also modeled. The twin is integrated into the rest of the hardware and software environment in such a way that it completely replaces the real test ship during trials, training and development. The digital twin is integrated accordingly as a function module in the control station, enabling the virtual running of scenarios. This is particularly important for safety reasons in order to be able to subject all systems to the defined tests (WP 2300) at an early stage in a virtual test environment.
Furthermore, skippers can test any maneuvers in this way without endangering other road users and producing accidents. The remote control system is being developed in such a way that it is possible to switch from the digital twin to the test ship at any time. In the course of the development work, not only tests of the complete remote control system but also tests of individual subsystems can be carried out using the digital twin.
